The late John "Casey" Marteniuc, a Second World War vet from Moose Jaw, Sask. Casey was a machine gunner who saw some serious combat, hence the hardware. Casey's war ended when he suffered a severe head wound during a firefight in Belgium. He recuperated in England, took a boat across the Atlantic back to America, then a train back to Moose Jaw, where we met often and he told me his stories over 60 years later.
