Kahaila Morris, left, and her mother Melissa Friday, right, are still looking for answers regarding the death of Morris's father, Geoff, who was shot and killed by a Regina police officer in May of 2019. This was taken inside Morris and Friday's home in Regina in May 2020 when much of the world was still locked down due to Covid-19. As I tell students, photojournalism is 99 per cent social skills and 1 per cent technical skills. It's about establishing trust and getting the subject to let their guard down. Sometimes that means letting down your own guard, which I did quite literally in this case. Because Kahaila and Melissa weren't wearing masks, I didn't either. I don't think they would have opened up the way they did had I worn one.
