This was taken inside Morris and Friday's home in Regina in May 2020 when much of the world was still locked down due to Covid-19. As I tell students, photojournalism is 99 per cent social skills and 1 per cent technical skills. It's about establishing trust and getting the subject to let their guard down. Sometimes that means letting down your own guard, which I did quite literally in this case. Because Kahaila and Melissa weren't wearing masks, I didn't either. I don't think they would have opened up the way they did had I worn one.
