The day after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, Macleans magazine sent me to Humboldt and then to Montmarte, Sask., to photograph the family of Adam Herold, the youngest victim of the crash. When I arrived at their home I was astounded how welcoming and composed they were. His mom, dad and sister promptly dug out photo albums and told story after story, all while still speaking about Adam in the present tense. Then they asked if I'd like to see Adam's room, which is where I snapped this shot of Adam's father, Russ, as he took a moment to collect himself. I ended up spending about five hours in the Herold's home. When I said I had to get going, the Herolds wouldn't let me hit the road until I sat down and ate with them and dozens of their friends and family who had gathered there to eat and grieve. The sadness I witnessed that weekend was crushing. But the kindness and humanity I experienced in the Herold home that night is something this photo will always remind me of.
